The Academy for Communication, Art + Design was founded in 2009 at Viera High School by a group of dedicated faculty and district leaders. They had a vision of what practical Career and Technical Education in schools should look like and the plan was simple. Students in the Academy would be part of a cohort that would share the same English, History, and Digital Media teachers for their entire high school careers. The result would be stronger student-to-student and teacher-to-student relationships. These relationships would help create a family-like atmosphere where we share in each other's losses, celebrate one another's achievements, and seek to spur our fellow Academy mates on to great triumphs in all that we dream to accomplish.
The vision has largely been realized and the Academy for Communication, Art + Design is a huge success. However, the story of ACAD is one that is far from complete. We envision an Academy that connects in meaningful ways to our community. One that forges bonds with post-secondary institutions for the benefit of our graduates. And we look forward to partnering with local (and not-so-local) businesses and organizations to ensure that we are teaching skills that are lasting and relevant.
The story of the Academy for Communication, Art + Design at Viera High school continues to be written. Every year is a new chapter and the future is bright. We're glad you're here. We hope you'll be a part.
Culture [kuhl-cher]: the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc.
The ACAD culture is built on a foundation of professionalism and personal responsibility. In all we do–whether it is our work in the classroom, our interaction with teachers and students, or our involvement in the community–we strive to do it professionally. When people think of ACAD, we want them to think of a group of educators and students that are reliable, ethical, respectful, courteous, and capable communicators.
We also believe fully in personal responsibility. A choice is a choice, and right or wrong we own it. We understand that we cannot control every circumstance in our lives. We also believe that through hard work and perseverance, unfortunate circumstances can be overcome, and great success can be realized.
Professionalism. Personal Responsibility. These are the hallmarks of the ACAD culture, and it is part of what we hope to instill in every student that spends time in our classrooms.
The true backbone of any successful student organization is parents. ACAD is no different.
From field trips to field day, parents play a vital role in the success of the Academy. Without them, off-campus enrichment activities would be virtually impossible. We also know that ACAD parents are business owners, community leaders, fund-raisers, and event organizers. You are the very people that can help our students-your children-make quality, impactful connections to our local community. In short, without YOU we do not exist.

The application window for the 2017-2018 school year will be open from Monday, January 16, 2017 until 4:00 pm on Friday, March 10. Completed applications must be received at Viera High School, attn: Barbara Kelly by the due date and time.

Required Supplemental Information
Selections are made through a lottery process. Students that are chosen will be notified via the VHS website, hard copy letter sent to the provided home address, and email.
